After a packed Chinese New Year concert at Kings Place, London, on 8th February 2015, New Sound China UK premiered its commissions “Five Steps”, “Off Piste” and “Lament” for Erhu and Piano by Gabriel Prokofiev and “Exhale” for Pipa and Piano by Effy Efthymiou at Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, on 25th September 2015. Our concert was featured by BBC Radio Manchester and our commissions were broadcasted on BBC Radio Manchester, Resonance FM and Spectrum Radio. New Sound China UK produces cutting-edge British contemporary music with traditional Chinese instrumentation. At its heart New Sound China UK is a musical collaboration between prolific British and Chinese composers and musicians. Our core artistic team includes international Chinese virtuosos, such as Cheng Yu (pipa) and Wang Xiao (erhu) from Europe’s leading traditional Chinese orchestra – the UK Chinese Ensemble – and renowned British composers Gabriel Prokofiev and Effy Efthymiou. The Chinese pianist Chi-Ling Lok is the founder and director of New Sound China UK.

New Sound China UK runs in partnership with Chinese community organisations including the Federation of Chinese Associations Manchester, Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art, Manchester Confucius Institute, Manchester China Forum, Wai Yin Society as well as Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London. New Sound China UK is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through the Arts Council England.
